Hi friends, being the first time here,as per the common sense, Namaste. Yogesh Borate here.
While listening the seminar, 'Journalism as we practice it' , I found a lot of confusion in my mind about the question regarding wid the paid news n our profession. All the great speakers took supportive approach for the paid news issue. Sometimes when I compare our profession wid other professions, a question blinks in my mind, ' WHY JOURNALISM MAY NOT BE A GOVERNMENT SERVICE?' From the starting of the seminar I found that every media person tries to pretend that what they are doing, they are in a right way. But who decides that, thats the real question. On the other hand the professions like High Court Judge works for the government but they all enjoy the freedom that we are hoping to be so without any restriction. They also work for the public as we will work in future. If they can enjoy then why we cannot??? Is it possible for us being journalists to work for the public with government sector. It may help to restrict such issues like paid journalism. I m writing what I m thinking, i don't know whether it is right o wrong.

Dear Yogesh, I agree with your views regarrding seminar. shameless support of paid news was also shocking for me.we respect the contribution of the speakers in journalism but still their stand of hyper commercialisation of journalism cant be accepted.I think there are some hopes from the election commission and PTI about the complaint they have got against paid news. Lets hope for the best.

All I can say to anyone complaining about paid news...
ReplyDeleteThere are two types of people.
1. The knowledgeable lot, who are aware of things happenin' in da world around em.
and....
2. The ignorant lot, who know far too little about their world.
----------------------------------------
Now, many of the knowledgeables are sick and tired of voting, and guess what, having seen my own vote to good candidates goin waste (thanks to bribed / dumb voters) many times, I do not blame them.
Those of the knowledgeables who still do vote, they will obviously not be dumb enough to elect someone worthless, just because a news item praised that person. They know da ground realities n have a good memory.
*****Now when we come to the ignorant lot, they do not read news in the first place. Paid news be damned.******
Now, lets say, for the sake of being nice to the ignorants, that some of them do read news and believe it. Now, it is not as if political topics are not discussed in this world. It is not as if people have no idea about the political bad-men n women, is it ?
Similarly, since most newspapers support their favourite political party, they keep a check on the scams of their rival's "progresses" all year. So people hear about that, by word of mouth, when they talk during lunches, at the bus stop, at the local trains, shops n elsewhere.
So, even the ignorants have enough access to information.
IN SPITE OF ALL THAT, SINCE 60+ YEARS OF GETTING INDEPENDENT, INDIA IS A COUNTRY, WHERE UNWORTHY PEOPLE, WHO HAVE DONE "ZERO" WORK OF USE HAVE GOTTEN ELECTED, REGULARLY. AND YES, THIS WAS WAYY BEFORE THE PRESENT PAID NEWS EXPLOSION.
What conclusion does that give ?
If people are gonna vote the bad people anyways (just because many of them get treats on pre-election nights), like they've been doing in India since ages..... WHY EVEN BLAME PAID NEWS AT ALL ? WHERE DOES IT EVEN COME INTO THE PICTURE ?
I'd say, it's really witty on the part of newspapers to mint money outta politicians pockets this way, because politicians don't deserve that extorted money in da first place, on top of that they're gullible enough to believe paid news helps (Remember DSK in Pune ?), and I hope they spend a lotta money on paid news and help media organisations fight inflation, so that journalists wouldn't lose jobs, and people's problems will continue getting highlighted, even if a small number of em get highlighted in today's day.
*CASE CLOSED*
*phew!*
Adding to that, I dun think the fourth pllar too should be a part of da government in any way coz doing so would just make them part of the system like the other three.
ReplyDeleteBesides, that is the only powerful system which still carries da PEOPLE'S VOICE (even tho very little in today's day), and that is still our only hope against the other systems, which, had journos not been there, woulda become imperial.
But well, they'll never be able to provide security to journalists like they give to the judges and the ministers (for obvious reasons) , and I guess that would be one benefit journalists can live, and have been living without. Peace OutZ! \m/ \m/
@ Yogesh, good start. But I see some confusion there. 'Paid News'is one of the most serious and recently discussed issues. P. Sainath and coverstory of Outlook had thrown ample light on it. We have to discuss it seriously. Firstly as one of the speaker said, it is a sign of growing corruption in the society at large. It is also connected to the kind of politics that is going on.
ReplyDeleteNow there is cut-throat competition in media sector. Profitmaking motive is gaining more dominance. Here comes the ownership and management factor, that we can't ignore. Many of us are working journalists and editors are also in the same category. That's why squarely blaming editors and senior journalists for this cancerous development is wrong. As Sainath has mentioned there were and still are the opposing voices. We should respect and support them. Accepting the situation and nature of the threat is an important step in this fight.
Another word of caution is that, media is not in the total darkness, there is enough light and many ray of hopes. Let us move beyond the 'Paid News' issue. Many working journalists and editors are doing excellent work. Let us appreciate them and discuss the more positive trends.
@ Shrikant and All
ReplyDeleteWe all should use decent language while posting our thoughts here. We are not chattng in the campus. The phrase used by Shrikant as 'lecture zodayala ale' is not in good taste. While writing we must be respectful and thoughtful.
We should remember that blog is a public sphere.
Hi this is ANUP
ReplyDeletethis is my beginning, though it is late but i have lot of in my mind to discuss.
without waiting i am beginning
--------------------------------------
i am agree on comment of INFORM REFORM.
This is the way through which they are dealing. The Professional journalism.
But we should appreciate the other journalists who are BLOOMING LIKE LOTUS IN MUD .
they r practicing there journalism. if u want to do real journalism then do it in same manner as these guys(honest) are doing. Before Independent Lokmanya Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi were doing journalism in British Raj. like that who wanna do pure journalism assume that paid news is like British Raj.
AND DO YOUR JOB.
SOME MAY HAVE COMMENT THAT IN BRITISH RAJ THERE WERE NO PRESSURE ON JOB & LIKE THAT.
THIS WILL BE OUR DUTY TO ACT WISELY & MAINTAIN OUR JOB & ALSO MAINTAIN OUR honesty ( dignity)
if will not get space in newspaper (because owners have there own interest & for that they are not going to scarifies) to tell truth or to do your job honestly then there are various way like BLOG & witch defiantly have more reach than newspaper.
hi sachin here,
ReplyDeleteI think that journalist should must be know that we are the server of public.Journalism is a Social work. There are some crisis like Paid News, Political ownership of MEDIA etc.But my pt is that we shall be future journalist , so it's our morality to take or dont take paid news. And tomarrow we going to them & demands of job, that time we dont thin about that thing. Isn't it?
In journalism don't see what bad , see what is good.Good thing make good afte that good make better & then best comming soon.So keep our work averagely good .& be POSITIVE!
Nice effort guys. Keep it up. All the best.
