Push your limits!

I attended the felicitation function of Rajiv Sabade sir on Sunday. He has left Sakal and has now joined Yashada as a director. In the function he spoke abt his journalistic achievements and the new environment at Yashada, an autonomus body of the state governemnt. In this context he said that, when bound by the rules and regulations or other constraints, people try to be creative and find innovative ways. In simple words, 'Constraints force us to be creative'.
I remember a proverb, `Every canvas has edges'. These edges challenge the creative talent of an artist.
What do you think?

  1. @ informreform: Absolutely sir! Perfecto! For me it's only when we are pushed to edge we try to find some solution. Well, whether good or bad is different thing, but we begin to think of making our life simple only when we need to. Otherwise, when everything is going fine, why would we need to invent something and "waste" our time, brain, efforts and mone? I remember a statement by Dr. Naralikar. He made it few years back, when I attended his lecture at IUCCA. He said, "We say need drives us to innovations. It is true. I believe that remote control is founded by lazy people as they need to change channel but don't feel like walking two steps. So...." ha ha!! Kinda true! Ain't it? :)

  2. Well Anish, I don’t agree with you at all. For you it may be so and I respect your emotions and opinions. (Well its nothing wrong to say that you attend classes only when attendance becomes compulsory ;) Kidding).

I think there are people who do things because they just love to do them and don’t care about how much money, time and brains they spend on it. As an assignment I was asked to write about VK Rajwade, the great historian from our very own PUNE and I do not think that there could be a better example I could use to place my argument.

Rajwade prepared an exhaustive list of village names, surnames and caste names.

He also recorded that several village names originated from the Sanskrit terms for animals: Jalgaon from Jaluka and Khanapur from Khanak (rat). He also prepared a list of 1,500 names of villages which originated from names of medicinal herbs, like Erandolfrom Erand.

Rajwade's vast scholarship even extended to a dictionary of verbal roots (dhatu), tracing the origin of words.

He also prepared a list of 150 key intellectuals of Maharashtra living in the period between 1898 and 1913.

He shortlisted 45 persons from this list and compared them to their contemporaries in Britain.

He died before realising his dream of penning the history of the Aryas.

Well I do not think he was “pushed to his limits” by anyone. It was his mere love for finding out things. And there are many such people who do things because they like to do them. So kudos to all those who greats who don’t need a “pushing.”

  4. Well yea, agreed wid Nisha that there's tons of jobless nerds out there who got nuttin better to do than listing 100 varieties of chicken that dislike road crossing, or listing 5000 types of ugly paintings that resulted in their maker artist gettin shot.

Ok, there are exceptions to this rule, like people who actually do things that have worth, but even in those cases, you'll see that 9 outta 10 times, there's a solid reason behind their super-passion.....A PAST. Ya'll must be knowing of IIT-ian Achyut Godbole who started a whole movement and trust to help the autism affected because his son happened to be unfortunate enough to be affected with it.

    @Topic and @Aneesh

Well yea, da first example that came to my mind was the one given by Aneesh bout lazy guy inventin da remote yo, and I wholly agree with da topic being a lazy and hence innovative person myself....:)

You see, lazy people love to reduce their time and effort, and yes, they REALLY Are THAT Lazyyyyy! But yea, laziness alone doesn't help.......it requires intelligence, application of it A-N-D EFFORT, but a lazy man will put in effort where it matters, and he'll only put effort if and when he KNOWS HE'LL BE ABLE TO MAKE IT....or at least, is getting some success.

By the way, excess laziness and (hence) lack of (both physical and mental) exercise makes people fat( +- )dumb and ends up killin' them. Issued in public interest. Peace OutZ!

  5. @ Aseim: That's exactly what I meant. I mean lazy people, who know own capabilities will try to create more comfortable environment. So they work hard for that and not other things. This way, we can say that Guy who started using "round wheels'' was one lazy guy who did not want to push his cart!! :P

@ Nisha: Oye!! Itna bhi bunk nahi karta hoon. I do attend sometimes!! :P hahaha!
Btw, I also respect your opinion about the research made by V. K. Rajwade. But poit here is creativity. As asiem says, their should be passion + capability. Do we know why Rajwade did all the research? & talking about creativity, I was saying that when we need or are under pressure, then we try thinking 'out of way' and try some probable options. That was my point.

  6. There always are some people who don't require any external driving force. They simply excell. But my point is- many times while working in a system, we do come across certain limitations- they are used as excuses. But efficient people find new and innovative ways, even working within systems. That is creativity.
