India In 2020 : Vision And Reality

Yogesh Parale:
Nations grow, shape their future, attain glory and wither away within the span of history. Thus, the golden hour comes and vanishes. Slowly but steadily, people of the respective nation transform to form another identity. The empires come and go as if a great game being played at the vast horizon of the human existence. But India or ‘Hindustan’ as being known to people from the first breath of civilisation is the only nation which finds its link to the ancient roots in a real sense.
The very word ‘India’ provides substantiality to the idea of civilisation. Since the birth of the first society or in present days , if we could think of the oldest civilisation – we could think of imagine nothing but Vedas , Puranas or the grand epics like Ramayana or Mahabharata . India appears as if an ancient saga blessed with immortality patiently waiting for his salvation through pathbreaking vibrations of history. From the oldest Harrappan Civilisation to the enchanting Vedic civilisation, or from the blood soaking invasions and the medieval monarchy to the modern democracy and value system, India has experienced the continuous progress of mankind through passages of different eras.
With the signs already started appearing, our holy motherland, India would definitely become a ‘Superpower’ upto 2020 to 2025. With the world’s largest chunk of youth power and ignited minds which have the desire to solve the mighty problems and courage to walk on new roads, the world is on its toes to imagine the brightness of India’s future. Yes, we face the complexity of problems and scarcity of solution; but the spirit of nationalism would help us to overcome the disasters, for it’s a tonic to chronic diseases like poverty, unemployment or disgrace of a nation in the international aerna.
India is a civilisation and the term civilisation shows the strange relationship with the concept of superpower. A nation is bound to fail in its attempt to become a superpower with mere developing its nuclear arsenal or enhancing its economic might. The terms civilisation and superpower are complimentary to each other in a sense that both these terms produce certain ideology, a definite value system, a unique culture and an untrodden perspective to humanity. The potential India possesses has to be converted into a full fledged and spirited nationalistic attitude. Once the fire is created in the furnace, no one dares to question the result. Thus, once an Indian mind and body is fuelled with the aim of the nation’s progress, the external results are bound to come. Then the diplomatic wins, economic substantiality, cultural influence, vibrant society, technological advancements are just a matter of time.
India would overtake China in the next decade to become largest growing economy in the world. Naturally, as the time goes, the world would not be able to absorb the Chinese goods with the present pace. This has to harm the Chinese economy which is pointed towards becoming a ‘manufacturing house’ of the world. China has already faced the consequence of the shaky nature of the economic structure of the globe. With U.S.A. trying to come out of the shock received after the global meltdown and China in a recovery period, the Indian economy finds a great chance to advance rapidly and compete with China- ‘neck to neck’.
India is a growing market; already the largest in the world which provides the ample scope for entrepreneurship and growth regarding any and every sector. The largest population in the world and 7th largest area in the world provides an opportunity to advance in every field, to influence the world with the Indian view point and travel to the ‘passage of eternity’ which rarely comes in nation’s life.
Where only the national interests are being entertained, and with no Indian living below poverty line, with no double standards in basic needs, no divide within the society, with no gender biases, with merit based education system and progressive, strong value system, India would soon find herself in a position, unchallenged and omnipresent.
The Indian mind can’t relate the term superpower to the concept of a military dictatorship or dominance over the countries. But as said by Mao, “My country would not tolerate any insult right from this moment”, India being a peaceful nation would like to remain so; but let us take a recall from the history – a superpower doesn’t sacrifice her own interests for peace! India as a nation growing in power must not play a second fiddle for any one in Asia or in the world. India now being fully aware of the art of balancing the power must not fall prey to any suicidal ideological blockages also !
As they say, there is a distance between a glass of water and lips. Thus, the problems are approaching fast and decisive in nature. The problems range from personal conflicts to international ones, from infrastructural lagging behind to technological backwardness. Besides, there are grave divides within the society with regionalism and fundamentalism at the doorstep. Acute poverty and growing unemployment already proving to be serious hurdles in the progressive path of the economy. Terrorism and Naxalism being dangerous threats internal security fabric, India faces the danger of being cornered at the global platform.
The issues which need to be overcome are multiplying in number and complexity and heron, India faces the greatest danger which has become the most serious obstacle in the progress of; that is nothing but the absence of political will. The danger comes not from any non state actor or internal unsatisfied person; it comes from the inert intelligentsia and ignorant masses. The level of politics needs to be uplifted whereas the national consensus regarding any major issue need to formed. The society has to become more cohesive and responsive. India will cross all the hurdles and come up against all the odds only if she raises herself to the need of the hour and act with the spirit.
The dream of becoming a superpower is not far away if showed ‘Indianness’ to find out the solution.

  4. Pakistan 1, Afghanistan 0

There has been a flurry of diplomatic activity by Afghan and Pakistani officials ostensibly aimed at influencing regional and international partners.

Pakistan's army chief of staff and other politicians recently visited the U.S. Relations between Washington and Islamabad have been cool in the last few years, namely because of Pakistan's double track policies concerning terrorism and the Taliban. The Afghan government for its part managed to convince Washington to change its attitude toward the Pakistanis because of their disingenuous participation in the war on terrorism.

Now that Karzai's relationship with the Americans has broken down, the Pakistanis are trying to take advantage of Washington's anger with the Afghan government. Their most recent visit to the U.S. ended with both sides reiterating their faith in each other and a large financial aid package for the Pakistanis.

President Karzai meanwhile is visiting with the Iranians and the Chinese, one considered a rogue state and the other an economic and political rival. Karzai visited Iran because of the new year and China to sign trade agreements, but it's obvious that the he is trying to strengthen his regional alliances with countries that have problematic relationships with Washington and Europe. Karzai's recent outreach to the Russians is based on the same spirit.

The benefits and drawbacks of Afghanistan's relationship with these three countries can be argued, but it's clear that Karzai has lost America's confidence and Pakistan is predictably stepping in to fill the void. It's incorrect to assume that relations between Washington and Islamabad will return to the way it was before 2006, when relations first started to cool, but it's worrisome nonetheless.

The Pakistanis somehow emerge with the both U.S. and China as strong allies. China's differences with India play to Islamabad's advantage, and they can easily exploit the void the Americans feel in Afghanistan.

The Karzai Administration is failing in its efforts to keep the Americans on its side. The administration does not realize that neither Russia, China nor Iran is prepared to take over the U.S.'s role in Afghanistan. Given its current state, it's not surprising that these nations are reluctant to fill U.S. shoes.

President Karzai's effort to find a substitute for the U.S. will prove to be futile.

When nations recognize that their previous alliances are not beneficial to them, they look for new partners. Afghanistan is failing the Americans, but relations are warming between Washington and the Pakistanis, their main ally during the anti-Soviet jihad. The Pakistanis engendered American trust. Islamabad's ability to create and support the Taliban for so many years during and after the jihad is proof of their enduring political strength in the region.

Kabul's current weak position is once again paving the way for the Pakistanis to play the lead role in the region as America's main ally. Pakistan's national interests are the opposite of Delhi's and Kabul's interests. India is not vulnerable like Afghanistan. It's the Afghans who stand to lose the most. We will once again become victims of Pakistan's foreign policy and this time we can only blame ourselves, or rather our so-called government.
