Being my first post on this blog, I wish to express my enthusiasm for the fact that being an academic activity, we will come together and express what we feel. It's perhaps nice way to read what everyone feel about things. What are the thoughts.
ReplyDeleteNow we are almost at the end of one year and during this, as we have grown, we might have came close, sometimes fought, but one thing is there, synergy is not entirely deniable.
Wishing everyone happy blogging and looking forward to read what "WE" feel.
On completely different note, I want to mention one thing. We have heard about "NRI" day and other thousand issues concerning NRIs, especially those who are "Marathi" and some concerns expressed over their kids not knowing much Marathi. People shout about declining of Marathi language and the literary heritage we have.
ReplyDeleteWell, for NRIs or those who have relatives abroad, there is one good news, our beloved "Faster Phene", perhaps "desi" Tom Sawyer, is now being translated in English. Today only I saw set of 6 books of "Faster Phene" at 'Utkarsh Prakashan' stall in a book exhibition at S. P. College, organised on the ocassion of "83rd Marathi Sahitya Sammelan"
We might find this ridiculous as things like "Phene", as we call them purely 'Marathi Matitlya Goshti' (pure native tales) wont be as enjoyable in English as it is in Marathi. But think about this, when we will tell our relatives or cousins and so on about those fantastic books we used to read, and just because it's in Marathi it will be hard for us to explain some terms and difficult for them to get, isn't it better that some of the best work is going places? NRIs and even other foreigners who might come across this will surely appreciate beauty of 'Children's Literature' in Marathi?
Well, I am going to buy one set for my cousin for sure!
Good post Aneesh. After Delhi study tour, some kind of synergy or the 'we'ness in your class is definitely there.
ReplyDeleteRegarding Faster Phene, it is a good read. And it's great that it is now available in English. When we read Hari Potter as 'Hari Kumbhar', Why not Phene be available across boundries.

ReplyDeleteWorking for a newspaper it sometimes gets mandatory to work late into the night. When your friends are partying hard, you are stuck with a copy which has no head or tail. But some copies are such that they make you wonder is this what really news is?
ReplyDeleteEditing this copy on Puneities going green by celebrating Earth Hour and putting off lights for an hour has put me in a fix. The story says many students learnt to live without electricity and got a lesson in saving fuel.
The first question arises is about how many of us really knew that we had to keep our lights off for an hour? Well, even if we knew, how many of us really bothered to do it? And then the big question: If you did learn a lesson, how many days will you follow it?
Most of such “celebrating days (Green day, Earth Day, Water Day)” seem to be like means of grabbing attention by certain organisations.
If you tell a villager that you celebrated Earth Day by putting off lights for an hour, I bet he will laugh at you for in the villages there is no electricity for 8 hours and sometimes even for days. Getting lessons in saving energy is far for he has not even got a chance to enjoy its benefits.
So why do we think that we make ourselves and others believe that we have added a feather in our cap by celebrating such a day when in reality we do not bother about it?
@ Nisha: Really something to think about. But if we consider this "save earth by putting lights off" etc. I feel, it's more 'urban society oriented marketing gimmick' than anything else. What I feel is, not only media but public in general wants 'sensetional' news and also loves to shout at media for not providing ''real'' news. Now debate can go on when people say that this is carefully done by media to fool people or market something or media has made habit of this to audience. But is our audience so dumb? If it is, they deserve it.
ReplyDeleteOn other note I think most of people, even journalists, fail to understand difference between 'sensitive' and 'sensible'
'Nuff Said!

ReplyDeleteGuess I could say well begun is half done! :)
I do not know if racing with ourselves will prove fruitful, because we are judging our selves in such a case, which will end up givin one a false sense of security. Besides, there's too much fun in racing others, n gettin ahead (da one factor ad-makers seem to exploit so much, human emotions, yea!)...
@Aneesh
I agree with your point. 'Bout time we give em Westies some pain in da brain tryna figure out what we say over here. Just as we've spent ages havin to read about bacon n eggs, pancakes, knights and Easter / Halloween etc. trying to figure what they're talkin about!
By the way, Earth Hour was a good initiative, but useless mostly. Still, it saved some electricity for sure, and some fuel was definitely saved (to be wasted sickeningly later) So I guess we just look at da positives/make-believe-plus-points of dis gimmick/stunt/fad, because da negatives seem to be endless lol. At least ultil we run out of optimism.....:(

ReplyDelete@ Aseim: The point you've made about looking positive aspects of "event" like Earth Hour is definitely there but look at what Gaurav has said. It is correct when he suggests that we spend one hour for Earth and exploit it for rest of 364 days and 23 hours. If that is happening then this 'special hor' does not make any sense.
ReplyDeleteWhat I feel is their should be a collective conscious, which should be propogated or rather intreoduced and lead forward and spread in such cases. People should feel it from inside that what we are doing is just fraction. And honestly, we don't need grand events to show "WE CARE". For that matter, 'Green Day' in our college was one good step. But how many of us actually tried for e.g. not wasting water or switched off our engines at signal (to name few things) and that includes me too. Not that I'm here to show off my AWESOMENESS and criticize others. We can work at micro level yet can contribute a large. I feel it can be done of we have our brain and heart at right place. Btw, have we noticed that even after putting notice and announcing in class, only 4 students and Tambat Sir are reading/Commenting here? Isn't this, too, a sign of how much we are moving inside the spiral? I hope not! Yogesh Parale! Read notice and write something which you only talk in front of us! :)
No offence meant!
Hmm as far as AWESOMENESS goes, when I switch off my bike, it dun turn on no mo' for da next 15 mins, regular servicing be damned....:P
ReplyDeleteP.S. >>> Since I'm far too classy......I waste 100% Pure Mineral Water only......;)
@ Nisha, you raised vital questions abt celebrating the days and 'symbolism' related to it. My question is do such days create some awareness among public and to what extent. Are there any better ways to achieve the real goals of such events.
ReplyDelete@ Aneesh, will you elaborate more on what is sensitive and what is sensible?
Aseim has commented abt 'false sense of security'. I do agree with him and I think most of us some time or other get trapped in such situations. Still we have to look at the things positively.
Someone solve this techinical problem. I cant read what Gaurav is writing!!! The font is missing!!!!!!
